A case study on the sand play therapy based on identity based metacognition model

Abstract
The purpose of the study is to identify the levels of identity based metacognition(IBM) showed in the stages of sandplay therapy and the effects of sandplay therapy on psychological acceptance, positive thinking, and perception of relational self. Overall 17 subjects of female college students had individual sandplay therapy sessions. The facets and the relationships among the narratives, the symbols of the figures in the sand pictures, the levels of acceptance¡¤action(K-AAQ), positive thinking(PT), and the levels of relational self-recognition(RSS) as self-integration of the client were analyzed. The narratives and the sand pictures expressed during the first, middle, and the last session were analyzed based on the IBM sequence. The results were as follows: First, the levels of K-AAQ, PT showed differences according to the stages of sandplay sessions. Second, the IBM levels of clients differed according to the stages of sandplay sessions. The limits and the implication of this study were discussed.
